I readily admit to being a newbie when it comes to any embroidery stitches beyond a cross stitch. Therefore, when I found that the Pintangle website was doing a Take A Stitch Tuesday (TAST) challenge, I joined up in the hope I could do more interesting stitches.
TAST 2012 started 3/1/2012 with a challenge to do some Fly Stitch. How to stitch this can be found on Sharon’s Dictionary of Stitches from the same site.
Below is my first attempt at doing this. I’ve tried it in 2 different sizes on a scrap piece of Aida. I’m currently not planning to make it into a sampler of any sort, so please forgive me if in further posts it gets to look a little scrappy.

Looks good. By the end of this challenge you will be an expert.
Karen
thanks for the vote of confidence Karen! Seeing some of the other entries from the more experienced people has been interesting, inspiring (and a little embarrasing) but everyone has to start somewhere right?!
Seems to me we’ll all learn and get inspired by the expert stitchers participating!
I have been impressed (and a little shamed!) by the other submissions that I’ve been able to look at – they are so good! Then again, I have to remember that the whole reason I joined up was to try something new to give my sewing a kick, and everyone had to start somewhere…..right?!
They’re really nice and neat, well done
Your fly stitch looks good, well done, it’s a pleasing stitch to do isn’t it? PS don’t compare yourself with others, enjoy what you are doing
It is a nice one, yes. I’ll try not to compete, although the ease of the stitch, and the results from others make me want to play around a bit with this one. I feel another bit of stitching coming along!
I’ve been stitching for a relatively short period of time, but I think that if we surround ourselves with all these experienced stitchers, our learning curve will be that much easier. Your stitches look very good, by the way.
Your stitches look very neat and even. I especially like the larger one.
The most wonderful part about Take a Stitch is that we are all learning in some way, by our own efforts as well as by seeing what others have done. Your stitches look very nice.
Are you really a new hand ? Those stitches are very even! Great work
new hand at these stitches, but not at sewing overall (I’ve been doing cross stitch for years).
This was a nice and gentle start – but thanks for the encouragement anyway!. I’m dreading the more complicated stitches, but then we wouldnt be learning then would we?! the whole point of this for me was to take me out of my comfort zone and give my stitching a kick up the butt
wonderful starting. all the best!
